Good Morning, Sunshine!
Do you enjoy your mornings? For myself, I am always happy to greet the day. It seems to naturally start the night before, when I’m already thinking about what I’m looking forward to the next day. Usually simple things, like savoring my first morning cup of black tea and walking my dog. Sometimes projects or meetings with friends. Then I let it all go knowing each day brings its own energy and surprises. I may have a day of pruning, planting, and yardwork all laid out like I did yesterday, only to wake to a dark cloudy, drizzly, damp cold day. Hmm. Change of plans! Great day to bake bread, make soup, get some writing done, and relax on the couch with a good book.
In the morning, I’m a slow starter and enjoy time for myself. Before I open my eyes, I check-in with myself on how I'm feeling and what are my top one or two priorities for the day. When I open my eyes, I'm greeted by the colors of my garden and the vast sky outside my window. I"m already feeling grateful and enlivened.
Pretty soon after I get up, I feed my dog, and then meditate for 30 to 60 minutes. And, sometimes just 20 minutes. This helps me transition from sleep to my day and also gathers and grounds my energy, clarity, and focus. Afterwards, I might enjoy my morning tea or I might head right out for a long walk with Ginger, my joyful Golden retriever. We get in some good, brisk walking along with lots of time for sniffing and grass-munching for Ginger.
Being outside first thing in the morning is refreshing and invigorating. I love the early morning light, our quiet neighborhood where we may see some big, black crows and hear them cawing or mourning dove cooing. We usually say hello to other folks passing by, out with their dogs or for a jog.
For me, currently, this combination of stillness and movement starts my day feeling nourished, grounded, energized, and inspired. I might change it up a bit each season. In summer, for example, when I’ll likely want to walk and garden first thing to beat the heat. Earlier in my life I’ve had different routines. For years, I’d get up at 5 AM and do yoga for an hour or so. For another bunch of years, I’d get up at five or six to run for a mile or two first thing. Our lives, needs, and rhythms change with age, place, climate, seasons, our goals, work, and lifestyle.
Now it's Your Turn!
Our morning routine sets the tone for our day. The secret is to make it enjoyable. Here’s some questions for you to consider.
How Would You Like to Feel Each Morning?
Calm and centered as you head off to work?
Pumped up and ready to engage?
Energized and nourished?
Radiant and ready to shine?
Are you happy your current morning routines? What would you like to change?
I invite you to create your own morning practices that help you achieve your goals and desired feeling. If you're like me, you'll notice multiple benefits from a morning routine including enhanced focus, clarity, and even joy along with ongoing energy, stamina, and productivity.
